While I'm enjoying the terminological jousting, I do think it's worth putting something onto the scales... ⚖️

For Grant and many others, the reality that "celibacy" highlights is precisely the abstinent dimension – because as same-sex-attracted, the perception especially in church subculture is that SSA people are presumed promiscuous. A problem for those committed to the traditional sexual stance of the church!

So "celibacy" does double work for those folks: 1) one's unmarried state is covered, and 2) a misunderstanding about one's sexual activity is immediately prevented. And frankly, given how straight single people conduct themselves in society at large, it's no small thing.

Do you know why I sometimes refer to myself as celibate as opposed to just single? Because of how many worldly singles are running around.

In the church singles are still the minority. (At least here in America.) Out in the world where the singles are happy and celebrate their singleness and being "child free" and often brag about their lack of a family they also frequently boast about all the people they're sleeping with.

I want church people to know that I'm not indulging in the S*x in the City lifestyle. Most people think all singles are promiscuous. The word "single' describes marital status but is not synonymous with chastity. Paul referred to women like me as virgins. But that sounds weird even among church goers.

I hate how messed up everything is in this sick, sick world. It's harder to be a godly single than ever now in many ways.
